Project summary - Project EnBa

The purpose of the project EnBa is to develop a concept for the sustainable use of construction waste. This enables to create a basis for the implementation of the European strategy on the prevention and recycling of waste in Austria ( Strategie für Abfallvermeidung und –recycling [KOM (2005) 666] )  and contributes to achieve the aims of the EU waste policy.

Topics/Backgroung - Project EnBa

About 4 mio. tons of demolition waste are generated annually in Austria. Depending on the composition up to 70% are recycled, whereas a large part is employed as filling material and in the landscaping. The rest is deposited in landfills. It is difficult to sell this recycled products. In order to structure the recycling in line with customers´needs, the Austrian Waste Prevention Strategy focuses on the prevention of waste production and on the employment of demolition waste.

Aims - Project EnBa

A concept for the sustainable use of construction waste is being drafted in co-operation with the waste management industry, the construction industry, the demolition companies as well as the public authorities.

Approach - Project EnBa

The new Waste Framework Directive represents the initial point of the project. In a first step, concrete parameters and criteria will be selected in order to enable an adequate description and assessment of filling and recycling materials.

Project funding - Project EnBa

The project EnBa is 50% funded by the EU within the framework of LIFE+. A big contribution is also provided by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. Other public funding entities are the Lands of Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Carinthia and Styria.
